Soccer stadium bodies identified as soldiers

Insurgents Kill 19 Iraq National Guards Wed Apr 20, 9:00 AM ET

Insurgents killed 19 Iraqi National Guards in a soccer stadium on Wednesday after taking them prisoner, a hospital spokesman and a witness said.

The shootings took place in Haditha, about 200 km (125 miles) northwest of Baghdad, according to Walid al-Hadithi, a doctor in the town's hospital.

The killings followed clashes in the area between National Guardsmen, U.S. troops and rebels, according to Hadithi and a witness who said she had seen the bodies in the town stadium.

The area is the site of frequent fighting involving insurgents, U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces.

Insurgent violence fell in the weeks after a historic election in January. However, officials' optimism about the fight against the rebels has lessened over the last two weeks because of attacks on U.S. forces and their Iraqi allies.
