Bloody Monday in Iraq as bombings kill over 40

BAGHDAD — Terrorists detonated a series of car bombs in Iraq on Monday, killing more than 40 people in a wave of violence that started last month when Iraq's new government was seated.
In the deadliest attack Monday, two car bombs exploded in northern Iraq, killing 20 people and injuring 20. The bombings in Tal Afar may have targeted Hassan Baktash, a Shiite with close ties to the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Khesro Goran, Mosul's deputy governor, told the Associated Press.
In Baghdad, a car bomb detonated amid a lunchtime crowd outside a restaurant popular with police, killing at least seven people and injuring dozens more, according to Lt. Muhammed al-Nuaimi, an Interior Ministry official.
