Help from the private sector
I just recieved an email from the Department of Homeland Security that reads as follows:
The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are reaching out to the apartment industry to identify short term and long term rental units available for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in need of housing.
The most immediate need is in the areas in and around Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and South Florida. If you have rental units available that can be leased by the victims in and around these areas please send the information to Private.sector@dhs.gov and identify the number of units, the size and rent per unit (so that they will be aware that the prices have not been inflated due to the circumstances), the location and contact information for the units.
HUD is telling all assisted housing that the displaced victims must be helped before your normal waiting lists. They will do the paperwork and direct the victims to you as they are processed.
If you are a victim of Hurricane Katrina and seeking resources to aid in your recovery process please visit the FEMA website for the most up-to-date information at www.FEMA.gov
I am sending the information to my main office and they will forward to Homeland Security. The owner of this complex where I work has 7 complexes throughout the state of Louisiana. We only have a handful of empty units but we are holding them for displaced persons and I urge every apartment owner and any owner of any kind of rental property to reach out to help. Maybe 10 units seems like a drop in the bucket but multiply that times all the apartments in the 4 state area and it will help enormously. We have evacuees here in this tiny town that are at the recreation center and in local hotels. The churches have been trying to provide food and other necessities so that whatever money they would have spent on food can be used for other needs. Whatever you can think of to do, I urge you to help in any manner no matter how small. When people have nothing except the clothing on their backs the smallest gestures can have a huge impact. Do not be deterred by the lawlessness that is happening in New Orleans now. Pray for our people. I can understand looting for food and necessities but to steal , just to steal, means they were thieves even before this disaster happened. Do not let that deter you from helping those who need help so badly.
Love to all and many prayers ...............................Katherine
