AMA northwest Wisconsin chapter of a national veteran's organization is sponsoring a unique memorial to the American servicemen, servicewomen and all others who have died in the Iraq war.

The memorial, titled “Arlington North," will be displayed Saturday, Aug. 13 from sunrise to sunset on the beach at Bayview Park in Ashland. It will feature a series of sign-type markers, one for each of the 50 states, listing the names of all service members from that state who have perished in Iraq.

There will also be signs remembering all other victims of the war.

The lead sponsor, Veterans for Peace, Chapter 80, is composed of veterans dedicated to preserving the memory of all who have died in the Iraq conflict and keeping them from becoming mere statistics "We honor, in profound sadness, those who have paid the price of war in Iraq.

We are painfully aware that each person listed in Arlington North is someone's son or daughter, husband, wife, brother, sister, soldier, marine, seaman, airman... each a unique human being."

The public is invited and encouraged to visit. Gary Van Der Puy of Superior Broadcasting Network will be on hand part of the day to record the feelings of anyone who wishes to speak about the deaths or the war, for use in a possible future radio program.

The event is co-sponsored by the local organizations http://www.ashlandwi.com/placed/index.php?sect_rank=4&story_id=206520and ABC (Ashland-Bayfield County) Peace North. Contact Person: Scott Somerville 634-4949.
