US President George W. Bush has ordered flags flown at half-mast across the country as a mark of respect for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The directive, which will remain in force until sunset tomorrow, applies to US flags flown from all public buildings and military posts, as well as the White House.
It also includes US missions and military facilities overseas.
Hurricane Katrina slammed into the US Gulf coast last Monday, causing huge destruction and triggering the flooding of New Orleans.
Officials at the local, state and federal levels have said the final death toll will proabably number in the thousands.
In a separate decree late yesterday, Mr Bush issued the same order to mark the death of William Rehnquist, chief justice of the US Supreme Court, who died on Saturday at the age of 80 after a battle with throat cancer.
