Bush's Iraq war causes shortage of National Guard troops
***
It wasn't a relaxing vacation for President Bush with negative polls, the Iraqi constitution hopeless, Cindy Sheehan protesting, and then Hurricane Katrina blasting the Gulf Coast. Where's George when the nation's worst national disaster hit? High and dry in California trying to drum up support for a war he started.
The South needs a better leader who will address its problems immediately, not after two days of pleading by Katrina's victims and Southern politicians.
We heard over and over about the need to send in the National Guard and the scarcity of Guard troops. Where is the Guard?
Instead of National Guard toops being home where they should be when such disasters strike, Bush has a lot of them over in Iraq being used as canon fodder for his war.
Because of the war, many are not opting for re-enlistment and recruitment is way down for the National Guard. This shortage will likely remain for years, leaving America vulnerable again.
Had Bush addressed the disaster sooner with adequate troops, hundreds more people could have been saved in New Orleans and Mississippi.
