A QUEENSLAND mother of four stranded in New Orleans was attacked and witnessed rapes and bashings in the terrifying aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, her husband said today.

Shane Huntley said today his wife Donna was on her way back to their Rockhampton home in central Queensland after spending several horrifying days trying to flee the devastated southern US city.

Mr Huntley said his wife had told him during a brief telephone conversation that she had spent some time in the New Orleans Superdome, where a tide of evacuees took refuge in squalid and dangerous conditions.

"She said she got bashed and kicked and she had a few bruises on her back ... but she didn't really go into much detail. She was really distressed about it," Mr Huntley said today.

"She said there was rapes and bashings and assaults.

"Everyone was turning on each other and so she said she wasn't going back there, it was too dangerous.

"She said there was a smell of death and dead bodies all around the place and everything."
Mr Huntley said his wife had been staying with friends on a four-month holiday in New Orleans when the deadly hurricane struck.

He said their children Chantelle, 16, Hayden, 14, Kristie, 12, and Harley, eight, had been terrified for her safety after losing contact with her for four days.

Mr Huntley understood his wife had managed to escape the Superdome and hide in a motel after being attacked.

He said he immediately notified Australian consular officials of her whereabouts after finally making contact with her on Saturday.

"As for the Australian consulate I really can't fault them on my behalf because as soon as I gave them the information I had, they acted straight away," Mr Huntley said.
