Channel Ten has revealed that during Ariel Sharon's most recent trip to New York, the Israeli Prime Minister raised illegal campaign funds.
Sharon was in New York to attend the annual General Assembly session and returned Monday afternoon to Tel Aviv.
Attorney General Meni Mazuz said Tuesday he will study the report, after the Movement for the Quality of Government (MQG) demanded him to study the channel allegations.
"For over a decade, law enforcement authorities have been dealing with public figures with leniency. Such an attitude encourages felonies," the movement said.
Channel 10 aired footage of the entrance to a swanky Fifth Avenue apartment building in Manhattan, where the Israeli premier had dinner with wealthy supporters Sunday evening.
An invitation sent by Nina Rosenwald, identified as the heiress of the Sears Empire, was read by the channel reporter. It says that people attending the dinner with Sharon in Nina's apartment would be expected to contribute at least $10,000 to Sharon's campaign to retain Likud leadership and end challenge from Benjamin Netanyahu, the former Israeli PM.
The election law limits such contributions to a primary election campaign to $7,800.
Real estate magnate Larry Silverstein, whom the channel interviewed after the dinner, described Sharon as "extraordinary. The man is brilliant, enormous energy, great conviction, tremendous courage, and we applaud him for what he has done."
"We're here to support the man"
Asked if Sharon thanked him for his contribution. Silverstein said, "No, but not necessary. We're here to support the man."
Other participants said donations were not discussed at the dinner.
Sharon's ally and Israel Bonds head Yehoshua Matza, who was with Sharon at the dinner, claimed that "Not a word was spoken about those subjects."
Officials at Sharon's office expressed surprise about the wording of the invitation, claiming that the Israeli Prime Minister wasn’t aware of the fund-raising, according to the channel report.
Sharon has been plagued by a series of scandals over the past few years that exposed illegal campaign contributions. Since the series began, journalists and researchers provided revealing information concerning the Likud's most important foreign funders which has proven to be accurate.
