Two Held without Bail in Fla. Man's Death

Fort Lauderdale - Two of three men charged with the mob-style hit of a businessman a few months after he sold a fleet of casino boats to Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff were ordered held without bond Wednesday.

Anthony Ferrari, 48, appeared briefly in Broward County Circuit Court but did not enter a formal plea. His attorney, Michael Becker, said Ferrari is innocent. No trial date was set.

"He's proclaimed his innocence since Day One," Becker told reporters. "It's going to be a long fight. He's a fighter."

Ferrari is charged with Anthony Moscatiello and James Fiorello in the Feb. 6, 2001, killing of Konstantinos "Gus" Boulis. The Greek-born Boulis, 51, founder of the Miami Subs sandwich chain and SunCruz Casinos gambling fleet, was shot to death at the wheel of his car by an assailant who had pulled alongside.

In Flagler County on Wednesday, a judge ordered Fiorillo, 28, held without bond on a murder charge. Sheriff's Maj. Mike Plummer said arrangements were pending to transfer Fiorillo to Broward County, and it was not immediately clear if he had hired a lawyer.

Broward Judge Steven P. Deluca ordered Ferrari held without bond on murder, solicitation to commit murder and murder conspiracy charges.

Boulis was killed in the midst of a bitter dispute over SunCruz, which he had sold in September 2000 to Abramoff and New York businessman Adam Kidan. Abramoff and Kidan are charged in a separate, six-count federal indictment with fraud in connection with the SunCruz deal. They have not been implicated in the Boulis slaying.

Becker said Ferrari provided "security" services for Kidan, who paid $95,000 to a company Ferrari owned called Moon Over Miami Beach. Moscatiello, 67, and his daughter also were paid $145,000 by Kidan for catering and other work, according to court documents.

Becker said that Ferrari, known as "Little Tony," and "Big Tony" Moscatiello were longtime friends originally from New York and that the money was not payment for the Boulis killing.

Police say additional arrests are possible in the slaying. Investigators won't comment on whether they received any help from Abramoff or Kidan in the Boulis slaying case.
