London - The foreign office said on Monday it had opened an investigation into suspicions that a satellite telephone leased to the British embassy in Baghdad may have fallen into the wrong hands.
The device was put out of use in June by the company which leased it to the embassy in the Iraqi capital after discrepancies emerged in its call pattern, prompting the inquiry.
The Sun newspaper reported on Monday that the telephone was stolen by insurgents who used it in Saudi Arabia and Yemen to plan attacks, running up £500 000 in calls.
