A new poll in his Houston-area district shows DeLay trailing badly, with only 39-percent support in a district whose contours he personally approved during the bitter redistricting fight of 2003. Former Democratic Rep. Nick Lampson is his most likely opponent.
Tennessee lawmaker Rep. Zach Wamp has offered himself as a candidate for majority whip - the post occupied by a DeLay ally, Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri. Blunt has been filling that role and serving as acting majority leader since the indictments. Two colleagues share some other of DeLay's previous duties.
