Schwarzenegger's "Austrian brain" -- Visions of Seyss-Inquart and Dollfuss dance in his head

December 13, 2005 -- Kalyfornia's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger once said that he was conflicted on the death penalty because of contradictions between the "Austrian brain and the American brain." Of course, Schwarzenegger was referring to modern Austria where the death penalty is banned. But, in reality, Schwarzenegger's Austrian brain is that of Austria of the 1930s -- the Austria that he has, on the record, said he admires. This was the Austria where his father was a Nazi Party official, the Austria of fascist Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss, the Austria of SS Grupenfuhrer Arthur Seyss-Inquart, the Austria that welcomed Schwarzenegger's hero Adolf Hitler as conquering savior and favorite son after anschluss (union) with Nazi Germany.

Schwarzenegger's "Austrian brain" -- Visions of Seyss-Inquart and Dollfuss dance in his head.

Yesterday, after Schwarzenegger refused to grant clemency to former gang leader and convicted murderer Stanley Tookie Williams, who had redeemed himself by writing children's books eschewing violence and gangs, the death row inmate was put to death in San Quentin by lethal injection. Apparently, Williams' death was slow because of a glitch with the initial dosage. Cruel and unusual punishment? Not in Schwarzenegger's 1930s Austrian brain.
