Blog reaction to Abu Ghraib photos

SBS "Dateline" program has sparked a reaction in the United States that has spread right around the world.

The American Civil Liberties Union sued the US Defence Department in September 2005to have all images from Abu Ghraib released to the public. The judge presiding over the case said that the "the freedoms that we champion are as important to our success in Iraq and Afghanistan as the guns and missiles with which our troops are armed."

The ACLU has said it does not know whether the new photos aired by the Australian "Dateline" program are the same photos being withheld by the government, and has been involved in a series of legal battles with the US government over the release of the photos.

Video: (WARNING) Graphic imagery of torture

The publication of the photos has had a growing reaction from bloggers across the political spectrum

THESE PHOTOS ARE VERY DISTURBING. Please do not view this video if you are easily disturbed by graphic imagery of torture and death.BoingBoing

If American newspapers avoid publishing any of these new pictures out of fear of offending pro-torture Republicans, that will be acceptable, right? After all, you can write an informative article without publishing photos. I certainly hope the New York Times doesn't publish these out of some juvenile or puerile motivationPoliticalAnimal

These photos were secured by court order - the ACLU figures prominently in the report - but these photos haven't yet been shown in the media anywhere in the United States. MarkPesce
Spreading democracy, one beating at a time - Forget political cartoons, this is really worth getting furious about. Warning: contains very graphic images that may incite you to want to slap your Prime Minister/President in the face. The Inside of my head

Good Old American Sadism On Parade - Americans will never understand how low we have sunk and why we are viewed as viciously as we are until they can look at these photos of Abu Ghraib that our government has tried to suppress from us, not wishing the average citizen to truly understand the level of atrocities that went on their in the name of every American citizen.Last Visible Blog

BAGHDAD - Well, it was bound to happen. Australian papers and news shows are publishing 60 new photos from Abu Ghraib. They snapshots were attained by the American Civil Liberties Union after a federal judge ordered their release. That was delayed however because the U.S. government appealed the ruling.Back to Iraq

New images from Abu Ghraib broadcast in Australia show a new scope of the torture committed by American soldiers at the Iraqi prison. With the daily protests in the Middle East over anti-Muhammad cartoons, the timing could not be worse. An Australian television network on Wednesday broadcast previously unseen images of torture at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. The photos and video stills, taken in 2003, are almost certain to spark a renewed debate over the torture of prisoners by United States soldiers.Planet of the chimps

The American government has prohibited the distribution of these pictures inside the US. In other words, the US goverment is censoring you, islam fundamentalist stylie. Fortunately there's the internet.Zermatt

Listen, I'm not saying that these pictures won't hurt us. They will. But let's rip the bandaid off in one fell swoop. Because now we face a reality where every six months a few more pictures and a few more videos make their way into the public eye, and we'll have to keep talking about it over and over and over and over and over again. The Moderate Voice

More idiocy from the Hate America First(tm) people. Stop The ACLU has the goods. Turns out, through a FOIA request, now we can see even more cool pictures from that one night in that 4-hour period in which soldiers deliberately disobeyed orders back in 2004.MacStanbury

I hope history proves unbiased. Even though it would be nice to be remembered as the benevolent big brother, I think it's more important that the facts get the recognition they need. Let future generations judge the situation as it is, instead of by the blanket the government has thrown on it.Bellasoprano

OK... I don't care... they were RIOTING!! Maybe we could have sent in Jimmy Carter or Al Gore, I am sure they would have "listened" to them. These are terrorists who were captured on the battlefield during a war, and they are rioting in prison, but they can't shoot them? Please tell me when I am supposed to care, because simply, I don't give a shit.Evil Conservative

Really, has there been governments since the Hitler and Stalin regimes (besides the other dictatorships) that have actually put so much emphasis on telling the news media to shut up about what is really happening in the world? Democratic Senators Represent More Americans
