Hundreds of people were feared drowned in the Red Sea today after an Egyptian ferry sank in bad weather on an overnight crossing from Saudi Arabia with about 1,300 passengers on board.
The owners of the Panamanian-flagged Al Salam 98 said between 300 and 400 people had been rescued but maritime sources said heavy seas and strong winds were complicating the work of emergency teams as night fell.
Dozens of bodies were recovered amid fears of a much higher death toll that could turn the accident into one of the region's worst sea tragedies in years. >>>cont
