Well, I am just beside myself. An avid Air America listener, I learned today that KXXT, 1010am out of Phoenix, Arizona has been told that they have until January 31, 2006 to GET OUT.
Now, I've known for some time now that the station had been sold. I also knew that a Christian Radio Station bought them, making this the NINTH Christian radio station in Phoenix alone (gag). The thing is, the local personalities have been very confident, as they had been told that the format wouldn't change. Until recently.
Well, Surprise Surprise....
Shaking the Tree's diary :: ::
I'm very concerned that this is the latest tactic of the radical rightwing mo-fo's. I am thinking that Air America is SO successful that instead of allowing the "free speech" to continue on, there is a big push to buy out the stations that Air America belongs to, thus putting a big FAT muzzle on free speech.
Listening today, there have been many (if not all) callers wanting to know that they can do. There was talk of beginning a publically owned station to put Air America onto (think of the Green Bay Packers and how they're owned by the people) but no one really seems to have any idea what to do to get it started (me being one of them!).
Another person called in and said that he'd started a petition to save KXXT. If you want to go to his site, www.donkey9.com to sign it, that would be cool.
Or, if you have any ideas about what we can do to save our only source of TRUTH, I would be oh so grateful. I listen to this station from 6am to 6-8pm every day during the work week. I don't know what I'm going to do without it! (well, I'll stream it of course, but I'm surely gonna miss my local people)
To be honest, I'm really pissed off at this beligerant behavior from the radicals. To think that they can't even handle a FRACTION of the AM airwaves to the liberal side...it just makes me sick. Of course, it's also a sign to all of us that Air America Radio is HUGE and it's making a difference in our favor...so much so that the rightie muthafuckas can't handle it. If it didn't piss me off so much that I'm not gonna be able to get it on my radio, I'd be happy to know that much! Anyway, if anyone has any ideas of what we can do out here in Sunny Arizona, I would really appreciate the feedback. Frankly, I fear that there is a very DARK cloud looming in the horizon.
Thanks for your time and Happy New Year!StT

Updated] Save Air America Phoenix --
What to do ... Posted: Saturday, 31 December 2005 5:47 PM (PST)
The Scoop: Air America Phoenix (KXXT 1010 AM) will cease broadcasting, becoming the 8th Christian Valley radio station, at the end of January, 2006 -- This heard from the McChesney brothers this evening who host the M & M Show on the weekends. There is no official memo, but it sounds like the word has been given to the station's employees. This has many ramifications, not only to my own personal sanity, but to the 2006 election cycle should the only progressive voice in the U.S.'s 6th largest city be silenced. We need to take action.
Background:
In October of 2005, James Crystal Enterprises sold KXXT in Phoenix to Communicom Broadcasting, owned by Rich Kylberg of Denver, Colorado. A format change to the station, an Air America affiliate was rumored, but not confirmed. CCA (Communicom Co. of America) has previously owned many Christian stations. I did some cursory research on Mr. Kylberg, and found a Westword article on his wife Holly, that provides some insight on their background and life in Denver. They actually appear to be fairly progressive and humanitarian in their approach to their community. In fact, I found that they had contributed to a Democrat's election in 2002. Perhaps appeals could make a difference.
Some facts:
Check out these Arbitron ratings for Phoenix radio stations. We are the 15th largest market in the nation and KXXT is the 3rd rated local talk station (if I'm reading this list correctly), out of the top 25 local station listed. In the 6th largest city in the nation, that's a huge share for a station that just celebrated it's first birthday
.What you can do: Speak out
-- E-mail the station to show your support of the current programming (comments@1010kxxt.com). Use some of the facts above. Let's stand and up and say thanks for the great shows we've enjoyed these many months. In addition, we have wonderful local talent in Charles Goyette, Mike Newcomb, the McChesneys, Rev. Maupin, etc. This is OUR voice that is about to be silenced.Stay tuned for updates as more is learned.[Update 1-1-2006] Welcome to the New Year! Something tells me it's gonna be a doozie. There is a great post that made it on the DailyKos site that brought this station change to a national audience

Here is the link to an on-line petition to save AAR Phoenix: PetitionOnline.com.[Update 1/3/2006]: Charles Goyette interviewed Bob Christy, General Manager for KXXT. Mr. Christy gave an informative recap of the inception of Air America in Phoenix. He also put into context the success of Air America nationally. It has grown to compete against long-term, nationally syndicated conservative talk radio despite inferior signal strength, dial position and far less time to establish a presence. Christy has an extensive background in the industry and is very personable and articulate. He has worked very hard to make this station a success.
Christy emphasized that the purchase of KXXT was business as usual, not a conspiracy as is being speculated. Radio, as a business, is in constant flux. The sale of KXXT was on and off again as part of the package deal for almost two months, until it was wrapped into the final contract in October. Because the Kylberg outfit (Comminicom) is a Christian broadcasting network, it would be expected that the buyers would convert their purchase into the format that they are most familiar with.
What next?
Christy is negotiating to purchase a new Air America Phoenix station.
If I can take comfort in Christy's upbeat tone and assurances that he can convert this successful station (one of the few AM stations to go black within about 9 months of operating) into bank financing, we can hope that it all comes together by February 1st.
What, me worry? I still have sent off my letter in support of station's programming and our local talent. I want to think that this is something Bob can take to the lenders. Hey, a loyal demographic IS money in the bank.
