Explosion kills 20 at Iraq mosque

A car bomb has killed 20 people and injured at least 30 at a Shia Iraqi mosque north-east of the capital, Baghdad, police say.

The bomb went off in the evening as worshippers filled a busy street in Howaider, a town just north of the city of Baquba.

The attack comes after weeks of violence between Iraq's two main Muslim sects, the Sunni and Shia.

It followed the destruction of a Shia shrine in Samarra in February.

A triple suicide bombing at a Shia mosque in Baghdad killed at least 90 people on Friday.

Most of those killed in Howaider were worshippers at the mosque but passers-by at a market were also caught in the blast, police spokesman Lt Col Falah al-Mohammedawi told The Associated Press.

In other violence in Iraq on Wednesday:

Two policemen and a civilian were killed when a roadside bomb hit a police patrol in central Baghdad

Two US soldiers were killed in a similar bombing just south of the city and a third died in a separate attack in Baghdad

A bomb at a market in the town of Khalis killed two civilians and wounded at least 20
