Former CIA Contractor Behind Bars in N.C.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A former CIA contractor awaiting trial on charges that he beat an Afghan man who later died was back behind bars Wednesday, authorities said.
When he was released from jail last month, David Passaro, 39, was placed under house arrest, and was allowed to leave only for work, church and other preapproved activities.
Passaro, however, was a passenger in a car involved in an accident Friday morning, police said. He was uninjured, but the driver suffered serious injuries.
In Afghanistan, the former Green Beret helped the U.S. military hunt terrorists, gather intelligence and train armed forces.
Authorities said he kicked and beat an Afghan suspect during an interrogation in 2003. The prisoner later died.
Passaro has not been charged in the death. Instead, he faces an assault charge and could get 40 years in prison.
No trial date has been set.
