POWER OF THE PEOPLE
Yesterday, French protesters forced the Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin to scrap a planned youth job contract. The proposed law sparked weeks of protests and a political crisis for both Villepan and President Jacques Chirac.
Villepan's political future is in peril after the failed attempt to pass the law. In January, a poll taken by the Liberation newspaper reported his popularity at 49%; it now stands at 25%, Reuters reported yesterday.
In the United States, demonstrations swept the country, protesting proposed legislation that would make undocumented immigration a felony. "This is a movement," the New York Times quoted an illegal immigrant saying.
The unexpectedly large showing of protesters across the county has put major pressure on Republican senators. As Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Ka.), one of the most conservative Republicans in the Senate, said yesterday "I think everybody is quite sensitive that they don't want to be on the wrong side, politically, of this group."
