President Bush accused Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid on Thursday of "single-handedly thwarting" action on immigration legislation, and got a brisk retort in return.

"President Bush has as much credibility on immigration as he does on Iraq and national security," shot back the Nevada Democrat.

A Fifth General Calls For Rumsfeld's Resignation...

CNN is reporting that a fifth retired general is calling for Rumsfeld's resignation.

"I really believe that we need a new secretary of defense because Secretary Rumsfeld carries way too much baggage with him. ... Specifically, I feel he has micromanaged the generals who are leading our forces there," said retired Maj. Gen. Charles Swannack, former commander of the 82nd Airborne Division.

The White House gave a new vote of confidence to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Thursday in the face of criticism from a handful of retired generals who are demanding Rumsfeld resign.

"Yes, the president believes Secretary Rumsfeld is doing a very fine job during a challenging period in our nation's history," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters.

Republican Sen. John McCain, reaching out to wary conservatives, delivered some bad news to the party's core constituency on Thursday, warning that the midterm elections will be hard for the GOP.

"We Republicans are going to have a tough race in 2006 because the country is not happy with us," McCain said. "We have a 25 percent approval rating in Congress."
