Army recruits allege injuries punished with physical abuse, medical neglect

RAW STORYPublished: Thursday May 11, 2006

An Army program for recruits injured in basic training has been charged with physical abuse and medical neglect, according to a report in Friday's New York Times. Excerpts:

The program treated more than 1100 soldiers last year at five different posts, successfully returning three-quarters of them to active duty. However, recruits said that at Fort Sill, "injuries were often treated with derision, ignored or improperly treated."

Injuries often worsened while soldiers waited to see specialists, who are in short supply because of medical needs in Iraq. Two soldiers have died since 2004, one or possibly both of accidental overdoses of prescription drugs.

The abuses were brought to light when the mother of one injuried soldier posted about them on her blog and complained to Amnesty International and to members of Congress. Commanders have acknowledged problems and have ordered that changes be made and a medical professional be in charge of each program.
