Japan passes fingerprinting law

W sets a bad example, Koizumi follows. This may be a slippery slope for worldwide travel.

Japan - the best friend of the Nazis in WWII, the best friend of American fascism today.

BBC - Japan's parliament has approved a controversial law to fingerprint and photograph foreign visitors in an effort to fight terrorism.

The measures will apply to all foreigners over the age of 16, except permanent residents and those on official business.

Japan's justice minister acknowledged human rights concerns, but said fighting terrorism was more important.

The US introduced similar measures after the 11 September 2001 attacks.

Critics had argued the law violated a constitutional principle to treat people with respect.

Japan is worried it could be a target for terrorism due to its close links with the US and its despatch of troops to Iraq.

Remember - Japan's perpetual ruling party, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), is neither liberal nor democratic.

It's rebuilding its war machine and rewriting its history books, to ensure that Japan's schoolchildren will never get to learn the atrocities their ancestors committed in the rest of Asia.

Japan's hard rightward shift is very worrisome. And W is doing everything to help the LDP out.
