The Latest Fatality

“If we adhere faithfully to the Charter of the United Nations and walk forward in sedate and sober strength seeking no one's land or treasure, seeking to lay no arbitrary control upon the thoughts of men; if all British moral and material forces and convictions are joined with your (Americas) own in fraternal association, the high-roads of the future will be clear, not only for us but for all, not only for our time, but for a century to come.” Winston Churchill

But we haven’t and a price is being paid. The conversations between Roosevelt and Churchill started in 1943 and are rooted in the Atlantic Charter. Twice in a generation millions of Americans and Europeans had fought and died due to state sponsored aggression. Both men were keenly aware that the failure of the League of Nations had facilitated a second war.
These great men wanted to try and build a vehicle of peace, that all nations had access for a peaceful solution to grievances. The failures of the league were their primary interest. During the cold war the UN was the last arena of diplomacy and in 1962 helped to avert nuclear catastrophe. The UN has averted famine and diffused crisis vaccinated millions and has been successful peace keeping, it maybe a leaky boat but it beats swimming.

But that is all over now, the current administration has murdered it like Caesar with conspiracy arm-twisting and subversion. The appointment of John Bolton a man with an avowed dislike of the UN was the final cut. This administration so fond of quantifying things in terms of dollars and cents and can’t see the advantage of a bad cop over no cop. They see the UN as Sergeant Schultz from Hogan’s Hero’s fame a vehicle to manipulate. Any legislative body must have leadership or it is doomed to failure but when those who are supposed to lead don’t believe in the organization, people die needlessly. The failure of the league of nations opened a Pandora’s box of misery the inevitable demise of the UN will do the same. If Darfur had oil would the US be more interested. If we as a human species can’t maintain a forum to peacefully resolve disputes what hope is there?

“But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.” Winston Churchill
