“Don’t leave me alone.” 7 year old Palestinian Huda Ghalya, who was orphaned when an Israeli missile killed her parents and 5 siblings
On April 17, 2006, a Palestinian suicide bomber went into a restaurant in Tel Aviv and blew himself up killing 9 Israeli civilians and injuring 50. Islamic-Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack. A US State Dept official immediately issued a statement condemning the bombing saying the blast was "a despicable act of terror for which there is no excuse or justification". Hamas was not involved in the bombing and maintained its year and a half long truce.
Details of the bombing were splashed across the front page of every newspaper in America.
In the days that followed the incident, Israel stepped up its attacks in the West Bank and Gaza killing numerous members of the various militias as well as a significant number of civilians who were caught in the crossfire. In one particularly gruesome incident, a Palestinian, who was taking his family for a drive in his new car, was hit by shrapnel from an Israeli missile. The flying debris ended up killing his mother, daughter and wife; three generations of his family were snuffed out in the blink of an eye.
The only account of the story appeared in the back-pages of a small number of American newspapers. Israeli violence against Palestinians is rarely newsworthy.
In the 5 months since Hamas took power, Israel has steadily increased its attacks in the occupied territories. In the last two months alone Israel has fired over 6,000 shells into the Gaza Strip. Additionally, Israel and the United States have openly collaborated to subvert the Palestinian elections by attempting to topple the new government. Currently, both countries are enforcing a devastating blockade of food, water, and essential medical aid to the people in the territories. Three and a half million Palestinians are being deliberately punished in violation of the Geneva Conventions to achieve Israel’s political objectives.
Israel’s attacks have increased under newly-appointed Defense Minister, Amir Peretz. Peretz, who ran as the “liberal” candidate in the recent election for Israeli prime minister, has shown greater enthusiasm for launching bombing raids in civilian areas than his predecessor Shaul Mofaz. Once again, the line between liberal and conservative blurs considerably once the ballots have been counted. Peretz has been just as iron-fisted in his approach to maintaining the occupation as former PM Ariel Sharon.
In his most recent foray, Peretz blew up an entire family who were simply enjoying a day at the beach. 8 people were butchered instantly and body parts were strewn across the sand. The incident has triggered widespread pubic outrage and condemnation which may temporarily set-back Israel’s plans for “unilaterally” drawing its permanent borders. Never the less, the killing hasn’t stopped Peretz from executing his belligerent agenda of incitement, shelling, and reprisal; the traditional means of dealing with the Palestinians. In fact, the carnage had not even been removed from the beach before the eager Peretz was delivering his next threat to Hamas.
"No one has an insurance policy. No one endangering Israelis can turn his name or title into an insurance policy,” Peretz said ominously.
“Endangering Israelis”?
Why talk about endangering Israelis when the sand is still warm with Palestinian blood?
True to form, President Bush offered his support for the “Gaza beach massacre” saying that Israel had the right to “defend itself”.
The comical Israeli president Moshe Katzav made an equally absurd comment saying, “As long as Hamas continues to support terror, refuses to recognize Israel and defies commitments made by Yasser Arafat and Mahmoud Abbas, Israel has to find alternative ways to protect its citizens.”
Hamas has maintained its rigid truce for 16 months despite daily Israeli violence.
Katzav’s remarks are not difficult to decipher. They are a pledge to continue the homicidal rampage against Palestinians until Hamas relents and withdraws from the government. This has been the plan from the very beginning.
President Mahmoud Abbas has been enlisted by friends in Tel Aviv to exacerbate the divisions between Fatah and Hamas by strengthening his security apparatus with weaponry provided by Israel. He has also called for a referendum that will force Hamas to “recognize Israel”; a move that is designed to undermine the government and incite greater conflict between the factions. Abbas seems unruffled about doing Israel’s bidding while the corpses of Palestinian children are being carted off to the morgue.
Israel could never have hoped for a more dutiful employee than Abu Mazen.
Peretz continued his provocations on Saturday, unleashing another murderous attack on two members of Hamas who were driving on the northern Gaza Strip. The tragic incident on the beach has done nothing to diminish the Defense Minister’s zeal for “extrajudicial killings”. Israel is probably hoping that the up tick in hostilities will conceal their expansion of settlements in the West Bank. Typically, Israel uses the cover of violence to hide their territorial maneuverings.
Funeral in Gaza: “Don’t leave me alone”.
In Beit Lahiya on the June 9, 2006, 7 year old Huda Ghalya offered her final good-byes to her mother, her father, and her other siblings who were cut down by Israeli mortar-fire while picnicking on the beach in Gaza. Huda managed to escape the blast that killed 5 members of her family because she was swimming at the time. At the cemetery Huda was inconsolable and had to be revived repeatedly after fainting. “Father, father, forgive me”, she said, as she knelt by his gravesite kissing his hand and weeping.
As her father was lowered into the earth, she cried, “Don’t leave me alone.”
Footage of the bereaved girl has been broadcast around the world causing an outcry against the “disproportionate “use of force and the savage practice of “targeted assassinations”.
Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz sent his “deep regrets” for the innocent people who were killed by his orders.
