Bush calls Middle East fighting 'pathetic'

STRALSUND, Germany, July 13 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush denounced the escalating violence in the Middle East Thursday calling it "a sad situation" and "pathetic." Speaking to reporters in Stralsund, Germany, after a private meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel, Bush said Israel had every right to defend itself from attacks by Palestinian militants and Hezbollah attacks from Lebanon. "It's a sad situation where -- when there is a very good chance for there to be a two-state solution enacted -- that is two states living side-by-side in peace -- it's really sad where people are willing to take innocent life in order to stop that progress. As a matter of fact, it's pathetic," he said.
