Reserves soldiers' groups: IDF avoiding paying call-up benefits

Remind you of another Country, its about time the military of Israel and America woke up from their slumber and realized that they are just a number, pawns, collatoral damage, they are expendable to their Governments.

Organizations concerned with the rights of Israel Defense Forces reserves soldiers claim that the IDF is refraining from mobilizing reservists by means of "emergency orders" ("Tzav 8"), and is instead issuing "extraordinary orders" to avoid granting reservists the economic benefits that emergency orders would entail.

In a new development, however, the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday approved the government's decision to issue emergency call-up orders for three reserves divisions. The decision passed by a large majority, with Meretz MK Yossi Beilin casting the sole vote against it.

"Israel is making a big mistake in increasing the IDF's ground activity and is walking open-eyed into the trap Nasrallah has set for it," Beilin said.

The Common Soldiers' Forum also claims that the government is refraining from applying the 1974 Extension of Terms Law, under which reservists mobilized by emergency orders are exempt from monetary obligations to the government, such as tax payments, and private contractual obligations.

In a letter to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Amir Peretz and Attorney General Menachem Mazuz, the forum called for activating the law on allowances to reservists.

"In view of the emergency draft, we also ask the defense minister to exercise the full authority under the Extension of Terms Law, regarding each and every reservist who has been called up," the letter stated. "Whoever has reported to duty to sacrifice himself ought not suffer or lose because of fighting and an inability to manage his affairs. Moral authority to send a man to endanger his life in war establishes a counter-duty to care for his health and property."

The defense establishment maintains that the reservists who were called up by "extraordinary orders" are entitled to the same benefits they would receive under "emergency orders." According to senior defense officials, those reservists called up have not been cut off completely from their homes and businesses and can still manage their affairs.

As for applying the Extension of Terms Law, defense officials say this law has far-reaching financial implications since absolving reservists from paying taxes and meeting private contractual obligations could create a chain reaction and paralyze the economy. The law, officials explain, was intended for total war, in which reservists are engaged for months, and has never been activated since it was passed in 1974.

The IDF Spokesman's Office stated in response: "Beginning on July 21, 2006, the IDF has enlisted reserves soldiers solely through emergency orders, in view of the large extent of the reservist units called up.

There is no difference in the benefits - direct or indirect - to which reservists are entitled, regardless of whether they were called up by extraordinary order or emergency order.

Regarding the Extension of Terms Law, the defense minister may declare an extension of terms, both for reservists mobilized by emergency order and reservists mobilized by extraordinary order."
