A passenger plane has crashed after take-off in the US state of Kentucky, killing 49 people in the worst US air accident in nearly five years.

The president of the airline has told a press conference the plane, bound for Atlanta, Georgia, was carrying 47 passengers and three crew members when it went down two kilometres from Blue Grass Airport.

It is the worst US airline accident since an American Airlines crash in New York killed 265 people two months after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

US authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash amid media reports that the plane may have taken off from the wrong airport runway, which was built for smaller, general aviation planes. >>>cont
