Bush purges take toll on State Department
Sep. 21, 2006 -- State Department sources report that long-serving Foreign Service officers who have disagreed verbally and in written briefs with a host of neocon Bush administration initiatives and policies have been relieved of their duties and have had their security clearances pulled on direct orders from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. A number of Foreign Service officers have been placed in non-descript administrative jobs awaiting further employment actions. The purges are State Department-wide and affect specialists on the Middle East (especially Iran), Latin America, Africa, intelligence and research, non-proliferation, international law, and the environment.
