GOP Forced To Abandon Immigration Overhaul...


Despite months of political debate around immigration, Republicans are now likely to be forced to abandon their overhaul of immigration laws in the crucial months running up to November elections. Key GOP members believe that pursuing the immigration package would "showcase party divisions," according to The New York Times.
It is a risky election for the GOP. August primaries show that voters "are not in a forgiving mood," and the party risks losing its congressional majority. Republicans are expected to emphasize national security, which they believe is their political strength. Democrats, however, don't think that voters will be easily swayed by security rhetoric. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) maintained that, "Every day, people around the country recognize that this is a failed administration."
