The US position in Iraq is ultimately based on the machinery of violence it's implanted in Iraq, that is the US Armed Forces, Intelligence (the black ops branch), Iraqi Puppet Government, and the Puppet Army. Currently, all of these are giving indications of an approaching US collapse: §1. The US Marines, beaten in Al-Anbar cry for help, the Resistance now being stronger than the US in Al-Anbar province. The US fist of operations is no longer adequate to counter the expanded war both in Baghdad and Al-Anbar. §2. The pioneers of war, the black-ops and torture branch of CIA operatives is searching for immunity by buying legal insurances in case they're sued and charged.
