Barbaric or just another type of farming?

In for the kill ... this is the shocking reality of Iceland's decision to end a ban on hunting whales for meat. Children watched today as the first whale caught was pulled into port and butchered in the streets.

ICELANDIC whalers have broken a 21-year-old international ban on whaling, harpooning the first fin whale since the moratorium was imposed in 1985.

Shocking pictures have been released of the catch this morning, with villagers, young and old, turning out to see the whale being dragged into port and butchered in the streets.
Fin whales are rated an endangered species on a "Red List" compiled by the World Conservation Union, but Iceland says they are plentiful in the north Atlantic.

Reykjavik decided last week to catch nine fin whales and 30 minke whales in the year to August 31 2007 despite the 1985 moratorium imposed by the International Whaling Commission. The first whale was harpooned at the weekend. >>>cont
