Chertoff's 'Chilling Vision'
Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff describes his "chilling vision" of a future in which the actions of the U.S. government are constrained by international law.
To avert this danger, Chertoff urges right-wing legal activists at the Federalist Society to go on the offensive against the European Union and other governments trying to pressure the United States into operating within the Geneva Conventions and other human rights standards.

One of the tragedies from the Iraq War is that the disaster was always predictable. But many policymakers and pundits let the Washington realities about their career interests blind them to the hard realities in Iraq. It was safer for their salaries to go with the flow -- though that turned out to be very dangerous indeed for U.S. soldiers and Iraqis. In this guest essay, Ivan Eland looks at how these old Washington tendencies are hard to shake. November 21, 2006

But WHY is it that Democrats felt the need to support the President's insane nation-building scheme in Iraq? Clearly, it was to save their jobs, but why would their jobs need saving after expressing dissent (or at least a modicum of suspicion) toward the Iraq war.
I think the goal for Democrats cannot just be to elect representatives with guts.
The goal also has to be leadership. Unless the Democratic base has a firm grasp on what we stand for (such as, for example, a realistic admission that America's own actions over the past decades are partially responsible for growing anti-American sentiment) we will continue to hold conservative views on national security issues, forcing our representatives to compromise their own progressivism.
By the way, great blog you have going here. Lots of interesting links.
Hey cardozo, Welcome from Down Under.
I to hope that the Democrats have a firm grasp on what the Majority of the American People are looking for in their Govt.
