Motive for murders
...The only beneficiaries, if that is the right word, of these two assassinations are the Zionists, and this explains why their usual spokesman, Mr John Bolton, immediately blamed the one state in the immediate region which dared to say out loud that it objected to Zionism and to the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, as well as wishing to recover its territory in the Golan still under enemy occupation. We should not allow ourselves to make any confusion between any ultimate wish of many in Syria to reunite the Lebanon within its borders and a ruthless intention to bring this about by murder and mayhem. The murders are in truth a deep embarrassment to the Syrian government, and the trigger for the death of Pierre Jemayel was, in my view, the signs of an arrangement whereby the Syrians would help to bring order out of the chaos created by the USA-led invasion of Iraq. As several commentators have now said, Syria had, and still has, absolutely no interest in the deaths of either Rafiq Hariri or Pierre Jemayel, but they give its enemies an excuse (however feeble it may be) to try to exclude Syria from making a useful contribution to bringing peace to the Near and Middle East...
