Western freshman charged with murder
An 18-year-old Western State College student has been arrested on first-degree murder charges
Although law enforcement officials won't confirm this, numerous sources both on campus and in the Gunnison community say the death in question was that of a fetus.
Addie Kubisiak is from Parker and was a WSC freshman living on campus. She was booked into the Douglas County Detention Facility on the first-degree felony charge Monday. According to a press release issued by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, who is investigating the case in conjunction with the Gunnison Police Department, the death "occurred in Douglas County in late 2006."
The search warrant wasn't issued for Kubisiak's dorm room until this past Saturday, Jan. 27. Gunnison Police Chief Greg Anderson confirmed that she was originally "contacted" on campus, but he wouldn't confirm where her arrest took place.
When asked to confirm that it was a fetus that was discovered, Anderson said he "couldn't release any more information because it's an ongoing case that we don't want to jeopardize."
A Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said she hoped more information could be released "in the next couple of days."
The vague reports sent somewhat of a shock wave around campus, according to witnesses. Word leaked that a murder had been discovered on campus, causing some students to flee residence halls out of fear for their safety, according to one witness who was on campus when police first entered Kubisiak's dorm room.
Western administrators issued a campus-wide email Monday morning saying that the current investigation "does not involve any safety issues for students, faculty or staff."
