Taliban insurgents fire on Australian chopper

AN Australian army helicopter carrying troops and Australian journalists over southern Afghanistan narrowly disaster after being fired on by Taliban insurgents on the ground.
The Chinook, carrying three Australian crew, six Australian journalists, a Defence media officer and members of the Afghanistan and US armies, was en route from Tarin Kowt to Kandahar on Monday afternoon when the incident occurred.
None knew how close they came to dying until much later.
It was only 24 hours later, when SBS Television cameraman Jamie Kidston, who was filming out the back of the Chinook, reviewed his tape that the attack was discovered.
Army officials said the missile appeared to be a rocket-propelled grenade.
After viewing the footage, Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Humphreys said the rocket came very close to hitting the chopper.
“From looking at the tape it appears that a rocket-propelled grenade was probably fired at the aircraft during the transit," said Lt-Col Humphreys, commanding officer of the Australian Chinook detachment in Kandahar.
Similar attacks had been encountered by the Chinook detachment before, he said. >>>cont
