Six bombs exploded in predominantly Shi'ite sections of the Iraqi capital yesterday, killing at least 45 people in a renewal of sectarian carnage that set back the US push to pacify Baghdad.
And in another day of bloodshed:
US forces killed three Iraqi police officers in a case of friendly fire during a raid near Ramadi.
An American soldier was killed trying to reach an Iraqi police unit under attack near a mosque in southern Baghdad, the military said.
Two British servicemen were killed and another injured yesterday after the helicopters they were travelling in crashed north of Baghdad during a special forces mission.
In the holy Shi'ite city of Karbala, health officials raised the toll from a bombing on Sunday close to one of the sect's most sacred shrines, saying 47 people were killed and 224 wounded.
