81-year-old British granny begins jail term to abusive behaviour

Published: Wednesday April 18, 2007

An 81-year-old British grandmother dubbed the "neighbour from hell" began a six-month jail term Wednesday, a day after being found guilty of a bizarre hate-filled campaign which included dropping her trousers at her next-door neighbours.

Dorothy Evans, from Abergavenny, South Wales, shouted abuse, struck Angela and Roberto Casa with her walking stick and told their 13-year-old daughter she was a witch and would kill the family pet dog.

Evans was given an Anti-Social Behavioural Order but persistently breached it with further bizarre acts including attempting to run the couple off the road on several occassions.

The pensioner's harassment of her neighbours began when she blamed the Casa family for a flood which prevented her selling her house.

The judge presiding over the case, Roderick Denyer QC said: "These offences all involve neighbours of yours. It's abundantly clear you will not change.

It seems to me, despite your age and despite your infirmities, you have deliberately, for a period going on for 10 years, made life a misery for your neighbours."
He added that the sentence would have been much more severe had she been younger.

"I don't really care what the sentence is. I just hope she never speaks to me again," a relieved Mrs. Casa said.

"I just want to be able to get up in the morning and go out into my garden without having to worry about abuse."
