So much for the "accountability moment"
The headline on the front page of today's Washington Post gives us George W. Bush as promise keeper: "Bush Keeps Vow to Veto War Funding Bill."
There's another way to look at this, of course. As the New York Times reports today, White House aides are now saying the president might be willing to sign war-funding legislation that includes benchmarks for the Iraqi government to meet -- "but only if the benchmarks are nonbinding." That would be the same president who promised back in January that America would "hold the Iraqi government to the benchmarks it has announced."
When will we see a headline in the Post that says: "Bush Breaks Vow to Hold Iraqis to Account"?
