Son of BU prof killed in Iraq

By Jessica Van SackTuesday, May 15, 2007 - Updated: 04:03 AM ESTA Walpole soldier, the son of a prominent Boston University professor, was killed in Iraq on Sunday while on patrol in Salah Ad Din Province.
First Lt. Andrew J. Bacevich, 27, of Walpole, was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood. His father, retired Army Col. Andrew J. Bacevich, is a professor of International Relations at BU who was critical of the Bush administration’s war policy.
Last night, the elder Bacevich said, “He joined the Army to serve his country in a time of need. We love him and mourn his loss.”
Bacevich’s sister, Jennifer, 34, said her brother was unable to enroll in ROTC because of his asthma. When the military eased its restrictions, he went on to become an officer. Despite his asthma, Jennifer said, “He was a guy who liked to run marathons. He liked to be with his friends. He was a real funny guy. He liked to run. He liked to play soccer.”
Bacevich graduated from BU in 2003 with a degree in communications, BU spokesman Colin Riley said. “It is a tremendous loss for the university community,” Riley said. According to WBUR, Bacevich’s captain told the family he was on patrol south of Samarra and was killed instantly when his soldiers stopped a car and a passenger “detonated himself.”
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
