'Rothko painting fetches 73 million dollars - new world record'

New York- An important painting by Mark Rothko offered forsale by the Rockefeller family at Sotheby's fetched 73 milliondollars - more than triple the previous record price for the artist.Later Wednesday, rival auction house Christie's is offering AndyWarhol's dramatic 1963 silk print "Green Car Crash (Green Burning CarI)," also expected to fetch a new record price for the artist of 25to 35 million dollars.The Rothko 1950 canvas, "White Center (Yellow, Pink and Lavenderon Rose)", was part of Tuesday's auction of contemporary art. It wasoffered for sale by family patriarch David Rockefeller, 91. It hadhung alone on a wall in his Rockefeller Centre office.The image has single bands of yellow, white and pink - typical ofRothko's work in the period.
