Cheers as Bush lands in Iraq
The real picture of the cheering troops
President Bush made a surprise detour on his way to Australia to visit Iraq's Anbar province in what he hopes will be a potent symbol to US Congress and the world that the surge is working - at least in this part of Iraq.Surrounded by cheering troops at Al Asad Airbase, Mr Bush touched down for six hours in the western province to offer his personal thanks, and to tell them: "If we dont want to hear the terrorists' footsteps back home, we have to keep them on their heels over here", and that's exactly what you are doing,".
To Iraqi leaders, who had also come to Anbar for his visit, his message was also clear: "America does not abandon our friends, and America will not abandon the Iraqi people."
