Iraq robbers steal over $A600,000

September 13, 2007 - 6:04AM
Robbers dressed as Iraqi police commandos have hijacked an armoured truck in eastern Baghdad, bound and gagged its guards and made off with more than $US500,000 ($A601,000) in Iraqi currency, police said.
The bandits used what appeared to be two Iraqi police vehicles to set up a fake police checkpoint on Mohammed al-Qassim highway, near the Sinak district on the Iraqi capital's east side, said two officers, both on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media. The heist took place around 1.30pm (1900 AEST), they said.
At first, the assailants in Iraqi police guise offered to escort and protect the armoured truck en route to downtown Baghdad, the officers said. Along the way, they forced the truck driver to pull over near Mustansiriya University in eastern Baghdad, they said. Then they handcuffed and gagged all the truck's occupants - five guards, one accountant and a driver - and stole the money from inside.
The truck had been carrying 680 million Iraqi dinars, or about $US550,000 ($A661,100), police said. One officer quoted the accountant as saying the cash was being carried from a factory in Baghdad's Zafaraniyah neighbourhood to a private bank in the Sinak area of the capital.
