The Undead Walk Among Us: Chalabi Returns!

Chris Floyd , Empire Burlesque
October 28, 2007Ahmad Chalabi, that "hero in error" whose self-serving mendacity was a major tool of the Bush Regime's PR drive toward the war of aggression they had long planned to wage on Iraq, has made yet another comeback. After the Regime's plans to parachute Chalabi into Baghdad as the strongman went awry – chiefly because he was widely despised by the Iraqi people – Chalabi was handed various plum sinecures in the various colonial arrangements that followed. Then a bout of intercine warfare between the various factions of the security apparat led to Chalabi's exposure as an Iranian spy, and at one point, he seemed hoosegow-bound. But so wedded were the Bushists to the convicted fraudster who had helped them despoil his country and slaughter a million of his fellow Iraqis, that Chalabi somehow hung on in the bowels of the satrapy.
Now he has, as it were, issued forth from those bowels to take a leading role in Bush's "surge," working cheek-by-jowl (or it is cheek-by-bowel) with the sainted General David Petraeus. General Davy has tapped the convicted criminal to – get this – take charge of infrastructure reconstruction in the wake of the surge. For a time, Chalabi had his mitts on Iraq's oil; now he gets to bury his nose in the reconstruction trough, taking a "central role" in a scam that has already proven to be perhaps the greatest criminal boondoggle in history, in terms of the sheer amount of swag that its perps have gobbled down.
