Bonny Jean Jacobs, 78, mother of Senator Joseph Biden's wife Jill, has died, the New York Times reported Sunday.

"Other details will follow, but we appreciate everyone's respect for the family's privacy during this difficult time," Biden spokesman David Wade said. Campaign events for Monday and Tuesday have been cancelled, and Senator Biden has returned to Delaware to be with his family.

Biden's last public appearance was on Friday at the deployment ceremony for his son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, 39, who has just started a year's tour in Iraq. Senator Biden was to be the keynote speaker at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner on Saturday and attend campaign rallies in Virginia on Sunday. No events have been planned for the coming week.

Jacobs had been in hospice care near Wilmington during a long illness. A memorial service is planned on Tuesday in Abington, Pennsylvania.
