More than careless
In 2000, when Florida was the epicenter of American politics as thousands of ballots in Bush v. Gore were being carefully scrutinized, McCarty was embroiled in a separate piece of political intrigue.
According to her testimony before the Federal Election Commission, on Nov. 8, 2000 McCarty was recruited by Roger Stone, Jr., a GOP operative perhaps best known for leading a mob of Republicans into a Miami-Dade County ballot recount, forcing it to stop.
“McCarty testified [to the FEC] she previously had met Stone at a campaign fund-raiser for Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and that they had worked together briefly when she considered running for Congress in the late 1990s,” reported The Broward Daily Business Review. “So, when Stone told her he was forming a committee ‘for the purposes of taking action against the Florida Supreme Court’ [...] she decided to go along.”
The group, the “Committee to Take Back Our Judiciary,” targeted for removal the Florida Supreme Court justices who voted to allow a statewide recount in Bush v. Gore.
“The FEC had concluded that McCarty certified an ‘incorrect, false, or incomplete’ campaign report that included contributions exceeding the $500 state limit, and that the committee had incurred campaign expenses without having money on hand,” noted BuzzFlash at the time. “Most prominent among the contributions it received was a mysterious $150,000 loan for a direct mail fundraising campaign that by all accounts came from Roger Stone, Jr. …”
“Fort Lauderdale attorney Mitchell Berger, a major fund-raiser for the Gore-Lieberman campaign who was part of Gore’s recount legal team, said the activities of the Committee to Take Back Our Judiciary should be investigated further,” noted the Daily Business Review. LinkHere
