CIA Faces Pressure to Divulge Ties to Ex-NazisWed Feb 2, 2005 02:25 PM ET By David Morgan
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. senator demanded on Wednesday that the CIA director release thousands of pages of documents detailing the agency's ties with former Nazis who aided in Cold War espionage against the Soviet Union, officials said.
Sen. Mike DeWine of Ohio, Republican co-author of a 1998 bill ordering the disclosure of government records on Nazi war criminals, wants CIA Director Porter Goss to say publicly why his agency has not agreed to divulge the records.

US guards 'filmed beatings' at terror camp Senator urges action as Briton reveals Guantanamo abuse David Rose and Gaby HinsliffSunday May 16, 2004The Observer Dozens of videotapes of American guards allegedly engaged in brutal attacks on Guantanamo Bay detainees have been stored and catalogued at the camp, an investigation by The Observer has revealed.
The disclosures, made in an interview with Tarek Dergoul, the fifth British prisoner freed last March, who has been too traumatised to speak until now, prompted demands last night by senior politicians on both sides of the Atlantic to make the videos available immediately.

Pearl Harbor Redux

"This is a war against terrorism, and Iraq is just one campaign. The Bush Administration is looking at this as a huge war zone," the former high-level intelligence official told me. "Next, we’re going to have the Iranian campaign. We’ve declared war and the bad guys, wherever they are, are the enemy. This is the last hurrah—we’ve got four years, and want to come out of this saying we won the war on terrorism."

CIA ordered to turn over prisoner recordsBy Larry NeumeisterFeb. 2, 2005 "Salon.com" -- New York -- A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the CIA to comply with the Freedom of Information Act and turn over to watchdog groups records concerning the treatment of prisoners in Iraq. "Congress has set the laws, and it is the duty of executive agencies to comply with them," U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein wrote. It was the second time in six months that the judge suggested the government was impeding the American Civil Liberties Union's quest to monitor government actions in the war on terrorism. The ACLU filed its lawsuit in October 2003 seeking information on treatment of detainees in U.S. custody and the transfer of prisoners to countries known to use torture. The group is seeking the records to show that prisoner abuse by the United States is "not aberrational but systemic."

U.S. Encouraged by Vietnam Vote Officials Cite 83% Turnout Despite Vietcong Terror by Peter Grose Special to the New York Times 9/4/1967 -- "New York Times -- page 2" -- WASHINGTON, Sept. 3-- United States officials were surprised and heartened today at the size of turnout in South Vietnam's presidential election despite a Vietcong terrorist campaign to disrupt the voting. According to reports from Saigon, 83 per cent of the 5.85 million registered voters cast their ballots yesterday. Many of them risked reprisals threatened by the Vietcong. The size of the popular vote and the inability of the Vietcong to destroy the election machinery were the two salient facts in a preliminary assessment of the nation election based on the incomplete returns reaching here. Pending more detailed reports, neither the State Department nor the White House would comment on the balloting or the victory of the military candidates, Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Van Thieu, who was running for president, and Premier Nguyen Cao Ky, the candidate for vice president. A successful election has long been seen as the keystone in President Johnson's policy of encouraging the growth of constitutional processes in South Vietnam. The election was the culmination of a constitutional development that began in January, 1966, to which President Johnson gave his personal commitment when he met Premier Ky and General Thieu, the chief of state, in Honolulu in February.

ACTION ALERT ACTION ALERT
U.S. Senate is poised to lock you out of the courtroom!
A key part of President Bush’s agenda for his second term is "legal reform." You can expect to hear him go on about it during his State of the Union address tonight. Unfortunately, like WMD in Iraq and the latest "crisis" in Social Security, the Administration’s case for making drastic changes to the legal system is another sham based on misinformation and deception, and serves as a front for the corporate agenda so dear to Mr. Bush.

As part of this drive the Senate will vote the week of February 7 on the so-called "Class Action Fairness Act" (S. 5). There is nothing fair about this proposed law. It is simply a way for corporations to restrict the legal rights of ordinary citizens to fight unscrupulous companies that sell unsafe products, rip off consumers, pollute the environment and employ unfair labor practices.
Please contact your Senators NOW – tell them that you demand fairness in our legal system, and that the only way to do that is to either stop or amend the class action bill. To send them a quick letter, please go to

Correspondence care of Medact The Grayston Centre 28 Charles Square London N1 6HT The Rt Hon Tony Blair MP 10 Downing Street London SW1A 2AA 8 December 2004 Dear Prime Minister, The medical journal The Lancet recently published a study that estimates the post-invasion Iraqi death toll at 98,000. The same study reported that the risk of death from violence among Iraqis is vastly higher than it was before the war began. You have rejected these findings, but offer no comparable assessment of your own. As you know, your government is obliged under international humanitarian law to protect the civilian population during military operations in Iraq, and you have consistently promised to do so. However, without counting the dead and injured, no one can know whether Britain and its Coalition partners are meeting these obligations. We therefore urge you immediately to commission a comprehensive, independent inquiry to determine with the greatest possible accuracy how many Iraqis have died or been injured since March 2003 - and the cause of those casualties.

Alas, John McCain:Oh, dear John McCain, sweet Senator from Arizona, how the Rude Pundit feels for you. You remember every night, don't you, Senator McCain, the pain and humiliation dealt to you at the hands of the Vietcong. God, what they did to you , in those years in as a POW, held in bamboo cages. How they hurt you, Senator McCain, broke your teeth, broke your bones. How tight were the ropes that bound your arms, twisting them, contorting your muscles. "Torture ropes," as you called them, are meant to make control of a prisoner simple - just a brief pull and the verge of pain upon which you've been living becomes the precipice of pain that you feel. How they beat you, Senator McCain, viciously, on a daily basis, sometimes several times a day, demanding that you say you're a criminal, a terrorist, if you will. They fucked you up

Infighting Cited at Homeland Security
Squabbles Blamed for Reducing Effectiveness
By John MintzWashington Post Staff WriterWednesday, February 2, 2005; Page A01
As its leadership changes for the first time, the Department of Homeland Security remains hampered by personality conflicts, bureaucratic bottlenecks and an atmosphere of demoralization, undermining its ability to protect the nation against terrorist attack, according to current and former administration officials and independent experts.
Although the 22-month-old department has vast powers over the lives of travelers, immigrants and citizens, it remains a second-tier agency in the clout it commands within President Bush's Cabinet, the officials said. Pockets of dysfunction are scattered throughout the 180,000-employee agency, they said.

FSU center spent public money to tout feds' policies
By Kimberly Miller
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, February 02, 2005
A Florida State University center has used more than a half-million in education tax dollars to put a positive spin on President Bush's key school policies, including hiring a public relations firm to teach charter schools to be more media-savvy.
Despite conflicting studies on the success of charter schools and other alternative education programs, the School Choice Center at FSU touts them as ways to "increase student achievement, increase parental involvement, promote school improvement through constructive competition, and accomplish racial and ethnic diversity."

Holy crap

Even more curiously, a "senior administration official" who briefed reporters on the Social Security proposal earlier today disclosed details of the White House plan that I don't think will play well in Peoria. Most significantly, this official revealed that most or all of the earnings from new "personal" or privatized accounts will be paid not to the holder of the account, but to the government. The senior official called this a "benefit offset." It's one way to finance the creation of these private accounts, but it's going to cause quite a political stir, I think.
