Ignoring the Smoke
Humankind is changing, or at least helping change, Earth's climate by pumping carbon dioxide and other "greenhouse" gases into the atmosphere, mostly by burning fossil fuels. The United States is doing more of this than any other nation. The consequences aren't coming; they're already here: Some scientists believe thousands have already died because of man-made atmospheric warming.

GOP proposes bill that would suspend ALL laws
But -- most overlooked -- is Section 102 of this bill. It would empower the Secretary of Homeland Security to suspend any and all laws in order to ensure the "expeditious" construction of a set of barriers and roads south of San Diego, to keep illegal immigrants out. It also would prohibit ANY judicial review of the Secretary of Homeland Security's decision to suspend any law. ON EDIT: While the law the bill references mentions barriers and roads "near San Diego," it does not appear to be (technically speaking) limited to that area -- but to any barriers or roads "in the vicinity of the United States border." (See comments below).

Baghdad -- Partial results from Sunday's election suggest that U.S.-backed Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's coalition is being roundly defeated by a list with the backing of Iraq's senior Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al- Sistani, diminishing Allawi's chances of retaining his post in the next government.

New York court rules in favor of same-sex marriage
A Manhattan judge declared Friday that a New York state law that forbids same-sex marriage is unconstitutional--a first-of-its-kind ruling in the state that if upheld on appeal would allow gay couples to wed. State supreme court justice Doris Ling-Cohan ruled in favor of five same-sex couples who had filed a lawsuit after being denied marriage licenses by a New York City clerk.

UPDATE: Officials Back Away from Early Estimates of Iraqi Voter Turnout
Then, in Friday's paper, Burns and Filkins noted that one election commision official was "evasive about the turnout, implying it might end up significantly lower than the initial estimate." They quoted this official, Safwat Radhid, exclaiming: "Only God Almighty knows the final turnout now." They revealed that the announcement of a turnout number, expected to be released this weekend, has been put off for a week, due to the "complex" tabulation system.

Statement on the Bush Blacklist for Fargo
"News of the Bush blacklist of dozens of citizens from a Fargo, North Dakota speech is as frightening as it has become routine for this Administration. To blacklist a local citizen because he produces a radio program at odds with the political agenda of the White House is dangerous for Democracy.
This Administration cannot promote freedom and liberty abroad while banning our most fundamental freedoms here at home. The pattern of stifling those voices that do not represent conservative orthodoxy has chilling implications for our Democracy.

Stark is first to put video on congressional Web site

Washington -- Fremont Rep. Pete Stark made a little bit of congressional and high- tech history Friday by becoming the first member of Congress to post a video clip on his official Web site.
His 3 1/2-minute blistering response to President Bush's State of the Union speech on Wednesday night is part of a new program devised by Democratic activists to let members of Congress communicate directly with their constituents by video. Republicans are expected to follow suit, and soon.

Pentagon still failing to protect the troops
By Edward M. Kennedy and Brian and Alma Hart February 3, 2005
THE THREE of us first met in November 2003 at Arlington National Cemetery when PFC John Hart was buried after being killed in an ambush of his unarmored Humvee in northern Iraq. We discussed the armor issue and how to resolve it, and we've been working together ever since to get the troops what they need as quickly as possible.
Unarmored Humvees had first come to our attention in August 2003 when Massachusetts soldiers serving in the Rhode Island National Guard were killed by roadside bombs called IEDs -- "improvised explosive devices." Our troops quickly learned that improvised armor protection was not effective against these improvised explosives. Soon we began seeing reports of anxious parents buying body armor, and even vehicle armor, and mailing it to their sons and daughters in a desperate effort to fill the gap.
So when Specialist Thomas Jerry Wilson questioned Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in Kuwait in December about why soldiers had to dig through landfills to find scrap metal to protect their Humvees, he was asking a question that should have been answered many months ago, when it first became clear that our troops were being sent out on patrol in inadequately armored vehicles.

.Parents censor high school literature and are allowed to burn books they find offensive

Here in Norwood, a small group of parents sent letters to Superintendent Bob Conder, expressing their concern over, "Bless Me, Ultima," a book being used in the classroom as a literature book. Conder said the books, about 2 dozen in total costing $6.99 each, were pulled from the classroom, and designated to be destroyed. The parents approached the superintendent and asked that they be able to burn the books instead of the school janitor destroying them.
Conder granted them their request, as he has the right to dispose of them. Conder informed the School Board in a letter after the fact. He further stated, "I can’t dictate morality, but my job is to protect the kids. The books should have never been purchased, and were not properly disclosed for approval."

Rumsfeld may skip Germany because of war-crimes suit

WASHINGTON -- Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Thursday he may skip a trip to a security conference in Germany next week because of a lawsuit there accusing him of war crimes.
"It's something that we have to take into consideration," he said when asked whether the suit was a factor in weighing whether to attend the Munich Conference on Security Policy, an annual gathering of government defense officials and lawmakers, where an address by the U.S. defense secretary is typically a highlight.
Attorneys from the New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights filed a suit with German prosecutors last November charging that U.S. officials, including Rumsfeld, are responsible for acts of torture against detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
