Court: Reporters Must Testify in CIA Leak Case
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court ruled on Tuesday that two journalists must testify before a federal grand jury about their confidential sources in an investigation into a leak that exposed the identity of a covert CIA officer.
The three-judge panel ruled that New York Times reporter Judith Miller and Matthew Cooper of Time Magazine must comply with a subpoena from a grand jury investigating whether the Bush administration illegally leaked the agent's name to the news media.
"There is no First Amendment privilege protecting the evidence sought," Judge David Sentelle wrote in the opinion that went against the two journalists. The decision upheld a ruling by a federal judge that Miller and Cooper were in contempt of court and should be jailed for refusing to testify about their confidential sources.

Reporter with prostitution links and false name got access to Bush; Questions surface on relationship with White House staff
Questions fly on Guckert’s relationship with White House
RAW STORY
The former White House reporter for the conservative website Talon News, who resigned after his links to military escort domains appeared on the Web, is said to have paid two individuals to set up a site on which he intended to prostitute himself, RAW STORY has learned.
These individuals claim to have invoices which show the name of the reporter Jim Guckert’s personal business as paying for the website’s development.
AmericaBLOG ’s John Aravosis has discovered previous images of the site through an Internet service which keeps records of sites that have been taken down. The images of the site seem to definitively show Guckert in various indiscrete poses. The images also match with images of Guckert that have appeared in the press, down to personal accoutrements, such as his watch.

(AP) Fidel Castro warned that the life of leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is in danger, and said he would blame the United States if his close friend and ally is killed. I was there for six months and I did not see the first weapon of mass destruction. I did receive orders from the company commander to shoot children if they threw small rocks at us and that was when I figured out that the entire thing was way over the line.
Over 1200 soldiers have died in Iraq so that you can have a couple billion more dollars, that should make you feel very good about yourself.

Bizarre Choice for Homeland Czar Deep in Scandal

Controversy continues to swirl around Michael Chertoff, President George W. Bush’s pick to replace Tom Ridge as chief of the Homeland Security Department. As the Senate began considering Chertoff’s nomination on Feb. 2, news broke that Chertoff had been implicated in advising the CIA on the legality of various means of torturing detainees held in U.S. prison camps in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay.
But as per its usual stand in the face of criticism, the White House officially denied that Chertoff did anything wrong or that he even had any part in issuing legal advice on torture techniques.
However, according to The New York Times, one current federal official and two former senior officials say Chertoff told the CIA that certain forms of torture were entirely permissible under the currently existing U.S. anti-torture statute.
Chertoff allegedly issued his advice in his capacity as head of the Justice Department’s criminal division following inquiries from CIA employees who wanted legal counsel as to how far they could go in physically manhandling terror suspects who were being interrogated.

Kerry calls for 40,000 new troops, more help for military families

BOSTON -- Sen. John Kerry called for tens of thousands of new U.S. troops on Monday and said the country should adopt a series of initiatives to support military families.
Kerry said he plans to file legislation to increase the size of the military by 40,000 -- 30,000 in the Army and 10,000 in the Marines -- to help support the country's efforts in Iraq and the larger war on terrorism.

After the lid of the Soufriere volcano blew four miles high and Volkswagen-sized chunks of rock crushed houses and people, two-thirds of the island was BBQ'd and buried in ash, including the capital city of Plymouth. The few thousand who didn't leave are now crowded onto about 13 square miles. There's a major housing shortage, the fishing and farming industries are crippled, and the Soufriere is still foaming. Scientists think she'll bubble and pop for at least another 20 years.
Brooklyn congressman Major Owens says this disaster was easy to predict when many of the functions of the Immigration and Naturalization Service were transferred from the Justice Department to the Department of Homeland Security in 2003 under the Homeland Security Act. INS had been renewing the Montserratians' status annually, but when the DHS took over, critics say, Tom Ridge could scarcely wait to cut the islanders loose. "The new bureaucracy's preoccupation with security goes to the ridiculous," Owens says. "The anti-immigration forces are so virulent. These are just 300 hard-working people."

We have honored our military for many reasons, but the war on ‘terror’ has finally taken it’s toll on honor. It is embarrassing to know some of the facts and not tell America the true military horrors, especially at a time we need so much understanding for our military’s actions. The problem is WAY bigger than the military. Our military men have little or no conscience of war or humane behavior (not all from the sterility of their training) but because many of them are on steroids and other forms of stimulants and drugs to keep them motivated. Conditioned Apathy. "Our boys" use ecstasy frequently for R&R here at home, in fact, there’s an ecstasy epidemic on the east coast right now, and it was in the news not long ago. Mix ecstasy with alcohol, steroids and whatever else, and "what we have here" is walking time bombs looking for a places to happen. They are not real. Uncle Sam’s manufactured killing zombies. This fact I’m familiar with because my first born daughter was first married to a Delta Force man stationed at Fort Bragg, N. C., where (on her birthday) she was forced to watch while her husband had intercourse with a prostitute, IN HER OWN BED. Shortly afterwards she separated from Delta Force, and became immediately involved in a ‘stalker’ relationship with another Special Forces man attached to the Army (a Martial Arts trainer for 18 years) where she not only witnessed the "fixes" of steroids as he administered them to himself, but she was eventually coerced into trying them herself ... in front of her 10 year old daughter. After eight years of life at Fort Bragg, having had her young life used up, damaged, and rearranged and PROGRAMMED ... forever, my daughter was "shipped" back home to her family "for her and her daughter’s survival’s sake." Rather like a wounded soldier after the usefulness of his services had expired. She is a mess; an alcoholic drug induced basket case. I don’t know who she has become. My heart is broken.

US missile defence test flounders again
A test of the controversial US missile defence system failed on Sunday - the second time this has happened in recent months. The failure has once again drawn condemnation of the programme from critics.

Bizarre Choice for Homeland Czar Deep in Scandal

Controversy continues to swirl around Michael Chertoff, President George W. Bush’s pick to replace Tom Ridge as chief of the Homeland Security Department. As the Senate began considering Chertoff’s nomination on Feb. 2, news broke that Chertoff had been implicated in advising the CIA on the legality of various means of torturing detainees held in U.S. prison camps in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay.
But as per its usual stand in the face of criticism, the White House officially denied that Chertoff did anything wrong or that he even had any part in issuing legal advice on torture techniques.
However, according to The New York Times, one current federal official and two former senior officials say Chertoff told the CIA that certain forms of torture were entirely permissible under the currently existing U.S. anti-torture statute.
Chertoff allegedly issued his advice in his capacity as head of the Justice Department’s criminal division following inquiries from CIA employees who wanted legal counsel as to how far they could go in physically manhandling terror suspects who were being interrogated.

Kerry calls for 40,000 new troops, more help for military families

BOSTON -- Sen. John Kerry called for tens of thousands of new U.S. troops on Monday and said the country should adopt a series of initiatives to support military families.
Kerry said he plans to file legislation to increase the size of the military by 40,000 -- 30,000 in the Army and 10,000 in the Marines -- to help support the country's efforts in Iraq and the larger war on terrorism.

Too Hot for the HomelandMontserrat volcano victims get the heave-ho from the U.S.
The nearly 300 volcano victims who fled the microscopic Caribbean island of Montserrat for safety in the U.S. nearly a decade ago now have two weeks to get out, says the Department of Homeland Security. After living here under Temporary Protected Status, most of them have built entire new lives here—with careers, marriages, and American-born children. They don't want to uproot again.
Even if they did want to go back to the ash-encrusted and still-percolating island, Montserrat's government is understandably less than eager for their return. After the lid of the Soufriere volcano blew four miles high and Volkswagen-sized chunks of rock crushed houses and people, two-thirds of the island was BBQ'd and buried in ash, including the capital city of Plymouth. The few thousand who didn't leave are now crowded onto about 13 square miles. There's a major housing shortage, the fishing and farming industries are crippled, and the Soufriere is still foaming. Scientists think she'll bubble and pop for at least another 20 years.
Brooklyn congressman Major Owens says this disaster was easy to predict when many of the functions of the Immigration and Naturalization Service were transferred from the Justice Department to the Department of Homeland Security in 2003 under the Homeland Security Act. INS had been renewing the Montserratians' status annually, but when the DHS took over, critics say, Tom Ridge could scarcely wait to cut the islanders loose. "The new bureaucracy's preoccupation with security goes to the ridiculous," Owens says. "The anti-immigration forces are so virulent. These are just 300 hard-working people."

We have honored our military for many reasons, but the war on ‘terror’ has finally taken it’s toll on honor. It is embarrassing to know some of the facts and not tell America the true military horrors, especially at a time we need so much understanding for our military’s actions. The problem is WAY bigger than the military. Our military men have little or no conscience of war or humane behavior (not all from the sterility of their training) but because many of them are on steroids and other forms of stimulants and drugs to keep them motivated. Conditioned Apathy. "Our boys" use ecstasy frequently for R&R here at home, in fact, there’s an ecstasy epidemic on the east coast right now, and it was in the news not long ago. Mix ecstasy with alcohol, steroids and whatever else, and "what we have here" is walking time bombs looking for a places to happen. They are not real. Uncle Sam’s manufactured killing zombies. This fact I’m familiar with because my first born daughter was first married to a Delta Force man stationed at Fort Bragg, N. C., where (on her birthday) she was forced to watch while her husband had intercourse with a prostitute, IN HER OWN BED. Shortly afterwards she separated from Delta Force, and became immediately involved in a ‘stalker’ relationship with another Special Forces man attached to the Army (a Martial Arts trainer for 18 years) where she not only witnessed the "fixes" of steroids as he administered them to himself, but she was eventually coerced into trying them herself ... in front of her 10 year old daughter. After eight years of life at Fort Bragg, having had her young life used up, damaged, and rearranged and PROGRAMMED ... forever, my daughter was "shipped" back home to her family "for her and her daughter’s survival’s sake." Rather like a wounded soldier after the usefulness of his services had expired. She is a mess; an alcoholic drug induced basket case. I don’t know who she has become. My heart is broken.

US missile defence test flounders again
A test of the controversial US missile defence system failed on Sunday - the second time this has happened in recent months. The failure has once again drawn condemnation of the programme from critics.
An interceptor missile sited on an island base in the Pacific Ocean was meant to obliterate a test ballistic missile in mid-flight, but it failed to launch, officials from the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) revealed on Monday. "Preliminary indications point to a fault with the ground support equipment, not the interceptor missile," it says.

White House Turns Tables on Former American POWs
WASHINGTON — The latest chapter in the legal history of torture is being written by American pilots who were beaten and abused by Iraqis during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. And it has taken a strange twist.The Bush administration is fighting the former prisoners of war in court, trying to prevent them from collecting nearly $1 billion from Iraq that a federal judge awarded them as compensation for their torture at the hands of Saddam Hussein's regime.

Giuliana Sgrena, an unembedded Italian journalist, was not kidnapped by the Iraqi resistance. If you read her stories, you will immediately realize the Iraqi resistance had absolutely no reason to abduct her. Giuliana Sgrena wrote about the suffering of the Iraqi people under occupation. "Suffering daily abuses and violence from occupation forces or their proxies, the Iraqis themselves are subjected to routine hostage-taking by the occupiers," writes Stefano Chiarini , Il Manifesto correspondent in Baghdad.
"This type of kidnapping distorts and defames the resistance of the Iraqi people against the American occupation," said Sheik Abdel Salam al Qubaisi of the Association of Islamic Scholars, a Sunni organization. For his effort on Sgrena’s behalf, Sheik Ali al Jabouri, a member of the Association of Islamic Scholars, was arrested by Allawi’s goons.

How comforting it was to know that one liar had just succeeded another into a post that demands the respect and confidence of the entire international community.
