British plant missing 30 kilograms of plutonium

London — A British nuclear-reprocessing plant cannot account for nearly 30 kilograms of plutonium, but authorities believe it is an accounting issue rather than a loss of potential bomb-making material, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority said Thursday.

The amount of material listed as missing at the Sellafield plant in northwestern England was "within international standards of expected measurement accuracies for closing a nuclear material balance at the type of facility concerned," the authority said.

Washington and Canberra cover up Indonesian military connection to Papua killings

By John Roberts8 November 2002

An article published in the Washington Post last weekend reported evidence that the highest levels of the Indonesian armed forces (TNI), including TNI chief General Endriartono Sutarto, were involved in the August 31 ambush of employees of the Freeport McMoRan Inc mine in the province of Papua. Two Americans and an Indonesian died in the attack and another 12 people were wounded.

The ambush was immediately blamed on the separatist guerrillas of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) but police investigations over the last two months have uncovered a growing body of evidence pointing to the culpability of the military. The Washington Post article makes clear that intelligence sources in Washington and Canberra have known for weeks about the TNI’s involvement in the attack but kept silent so as not to compromise US and Australian government efforts to forge closer links with the Indonesian military.

The article is based on information leaked by two US sources from an intelligence report provided to the US State Department in mid-September. According to the Post, the report revealed that senior TNI officials, including Sutarto, had discussed an operation against the Freeport mine as a means of discrediting the OPM and prodding the US into branding it as a terrorist group. The information came from a source, described by the report as "highly reliable" and privy to the content of the conversations.

New allegations of prisoner abuse by U.S. soldiers

The documents were released Friday by the American Civil Liberties Union which requested information about U.S. detainees around the world through the Freedom of Information Act.

In one of the most serious allegations, an Iraqi prisoner said that U.S. soldiers beat him with a baseball bat, broke his nose, dislocated his arms and stuck an unloaded pistol in his mouth and pulled the trigger.
Then he said they forced him to drop an abuse claim in exchange for his freedom.

Treasury's Role in Illicit Iraq Oil Sales Cited

Senator Releases E-Mail From Parties Involved in Shipments Banned by U.N.

By Colum LynchWashington Post Staff WriterThursday, February 17, 2005; Page A14

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 16 -- The Treasury Department provided assurances that the United States would not obstruct two companies' plans to import millions of barrels of oil from Iraq in March 2003 in violation of U.N. sanctions, according to an e-mail from one of the companies.

Diplomats and oil brokers have recently said that the United States had long turned a blind eye to illicit shipments of Iraqi oil by its allies Jordan and Turkey. The United States acknowledged this week that it had acquiesced in the trade to ensure that crucial allies would not suffer economic hardships.

But the e-mail, along with others released this week by Sen. Carl M. Levin (Mich.), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Governmental Affairs panel's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, provides evidence that the Bush administration directly abetted Jordan's efforts to build up its strategic reserves with smuggled Iraqi oil in the weeks before the United States invaded Iraq in March 2003.

'America would back Israel attack on Iran'

By Francis Harris in Washington

(Filed: 18/02/2005)

President George W Bush added a new twist to the international tension over Iran's nuclear programme last night by pledging to support Israel if it tries to destroy the Islamic regime's capacity to make an atomic bomb.

Asked whether he would back Israel if it raided Teheran's nuclear facilities, Mr Bush first expressed cautious solidarity with European efforts, led by Britain, France and Germany, to negotiate with Iran.
But he quickly qualified himself, adding that all nations should be concerned about whether Iran could make nuclear weapons.

"Clearly, if I was the leader of Israel and I'd listened to some of the statements by the Iranian ayatollahs that regarded the security of my country, I'd be concerned about Iran having a nuclear weapon as well. And in that Israel is our ally, and in that we've made a very strong commitment to support Israel, we will support Israel if her security is threatened."

Nation’s largest newspapers play down a thousand pages of evidence of new torture

Washington Post relegates new proof of torture to page 16
The Washington Post, apparently jaded by month after month of reports of torture of Iraq, Afghan, and prisoners held by Americans in various other countries, relegated a thousand pages of new torture documents to page A-16 of Friday’s paper. That story, by R. Jeffrey Smith, is excerpted here.

The New York Times also dumped the story deep into the A-section, with a meager 633 words.

Screw the Children

Budgets are the guts of government. That's where you find the answer to the first of the three important questions about who runs a society: Who's getting screwed? Who's doing the screwing? And what the hell will they do to us next?

There was a time when reporters actually read budgets to find out what was going on, but the things are so humongous these days, we've given up on that. Consequently, there's usually a bit of a pause after a budget comes out, while we wait to hear from the various special interest groups that study their own section of a budget in minute detail. Then, the screaming from injured parties commences, and the press presumably sits up and takes note of who's screaming loudest.

With President Bush's proposed budget, may it die in committee, no pause is necessary. Read any overview of the proposal, and you can see exactly who's getting screwed: children.

BREAKING NEWS: Gannon reportedly knew about "Shock and Awe" four hours before it happened

According to the producer, Gannon specifically told them that in four hours the president was going to be making a speech to the nation announcing the "shock and awe" campaign had begun. The producer told me they were surprised that Gannon, working with such a small news outfit, could have access to such information, but "what did you know, he was right," the producer said today. The producer went on to say that Gannon often had correct scoops on major stories, including information about Mary Mapes and the Dan Rather BUSH/AWOL scandal that this news outlet got from Gannon before any had the information publicly.

Gannon’s own statements suggest he fed exclusive stories damaging Bush opponents.

Gannon bragged about feeding damaging stories to media
Rep. Slaughter: Every day brings a new revelation

By John Byrne RAW STORY Editor
According to his own accounts, the disgraced White House reporter writing under the pseudonym Jeff Gannon bragged about feeding an exclusive story discrediting President Bush’s opponents to a major news outlet, RAW STORY has learned.

In addition, a producer at an affiliate of the major networks told AmericaBLOG’s John Aravosis that they had also received notice of the story, and another story as well–the exact time for the beginning of the U.S.-led "shock and awe" campaign in Iraq–four hours before President Bush announced it to the nation.

Gannon also claimed to have had access to a highly confidential CIA memorandum naming CIA agent Valerie Plame, a CIA agent who was outed by syndicated conservative columnist Robert Novak.
On none of the stories–Plame, Mapes and the start of the Iraq war– did Gannon actually break the story. This allows for the possibility that Gannon pretended he had information he did not have
.
The producer’s account, however, suggests Gannon was used to plant stories in the mainstream press, stories that the White House could not have placed themselves without taking damage politically.
"Gannon’s stuff was always golden," the producer told Aravosis. "How does this small news outfit get this info?"

Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY), who has been leading the charge with Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) for an inquiry into the Gannon affair, expressed amazement at the new revelations.

"Every day brings a new revelation," Slaughter told Raw Story Friday. "If this pans out to be true we can add it to the mounting stack of evidence that Mr. Gannon had a special relationship with the White House despite his dubious credentials."

Gannon bragged about passing a scoop on who obtained the troubled Bush National Guard memos to Fox News’ Sean Hannity on the conservative forum Free Republic.

"Mary Mapes is DEFINITELY [sic] behind the story," Gannon wrote in Free Republic on Sept. 10, 2004. "This is who I told Sean Hannity got the documents. She also obtained the Abu Ghraib photos."

"I got the scoop and passed it to Hannity," Gannon added. "Look for my detailed story on Monday at Talon News. There is much more to this story. Mary Mapes is just the beginning."

That story–that CBS producer Mary Mapes was the source of the troubled Bush Guard documents–shredded the credibility of anchor Dan Rather and killed any chance the facts that Bush had failed to adequately perform his duties as a member of the Texas Air National Guard would be taken seriously.

Afghan Photos Sparked Inquiry

WASHINGTON — In a case that echoes the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq, U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan posed before cameras while threatening to shoot prisoners in the head, shoving a detainee into a wall and punching another inmate. The troops also mugged for "trophy shots" with the corpse of an enemy fighter who had invaded their camp last year.

According to military documents disclosed Thursday, the soldiers, fearing "another public outrage," destroyed many of the photos and video images after photographs of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib were beamed around the world, resulting in widespread shock and criticism.

The remaining images were discovered by happenstance last year during the routine cleaning of a captain's office at the Bagram air base in Afghanistan.

Rice moves to name senior advisers
Expected choice on Iraq has ties to Halliburton probe

By Farah Stockman, Globe Staff February 17, 2005

WASHINGTON -- Just three weeks after becoming secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice is moving quickly to put her stamp on US foreign policy for Iraq and the Middle East, establishing a new coterie of senior advisers who report directly to her.

The move signals Rice's desire to personally shepherd US policy in the Arab world during President Bush's second term and to swiftly assert control over a far-flung department bureaucracy that has often been at odds with the White House, State Department officials and specialists say.

At least one of her expected appointments is controversial. She has chosen Richard Jones, a former ambassador to Kuwait and deputy of the Coalition Provisional Authority who has been linked to the Halliburton inquiries, as her new coordinator for Iraq.

According to documents released by the State Department to a member of Congress, Jones intervened in December 2003 to pressure a Halliburton subsidiary to purchase gasoline from a Kuwaiti subcontractor favored by the government of Kuwait, despite mounting evidence that the subcontractor, Altanmia Commercial Marketing Co., was charging more than twice as much as other companies for the fuel.

That Negroponte sure knows a lot about terrorism

Breaking news:

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush on Thursday named John Negroponte, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and currently the administration’s top representative in Iraq, to be America’s first national intelligence director.

.... Announcing the move at the White House, Bush said that Negroponte understands global intelligence needs because he’s had a long career in the foreign service. "John will make sure that those whose duty it is to defend America have the information we need to make the right decisions," Bush said. "We’re going to stop the terrorists before theystrike."

Negroponte is certainly a good choice to get inside the mind of a terrorist, since as U.S. ambassador to Honduras under Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s, he reportedly collaborated with a top-secret Army death squad, ominously called Battalion 316, that kidnaped, tortured and killed hundreds of civilians there. Honduras was a key ally for the Reagan crowd in its covert "contra" effort to topple Nicaragua's leftist government.
