Hicks has rights, rules US judge

A US court decision that declared the Guantanamo Bay military commissions unconstitutional, and said the prisoners had rights under the US constitution to challenge their detention, has intensified calls for the Australian Government to demand David Hicks get a fair trial or be brought home.

Amar Ahmed Mohammed was 19 years old. But the fact that he had the mind of a four-year-old did not stop the insurgency's hard men as they strapped explosives to his chest and guided him to a voting centre in suburban Al-Askan.

If China Shuns Dollar, Look Out U.S. Bonds:
William Pesek Jr.
Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Malaysia isn't a place traders look for clues about the U.S. dollar, yet Asia's No. 10 economy may be offering some ominous ones.
They can be found in a recent report on international reserve holdings at Bank Negara Malaysia, the nation's central bank. It states that Malaysia made a $2.1 billion ``revaluation gain'' in 2004, ``arising mainly from the depreciation of the U.S. dollar against the major currencies

----BULLSHIT ALERT !!----
"Senate Democrats have enough votes to block major Bush initiatives like Social Security reform and to reject Bush appointees, including Supreme Court nominees. They may be suicidal, but they could undermine the president's entire second term agenda. At his news conference last week, Bush reacted calmly to their vitriolic attacks, suggesting only a few Democrats are involved. Stronger countermeasures will be needed, including an unequivocal White House response to obstructionism, curbs on filibusters, and a clear delineation of what's permissible and what's out of bounds in dissent on Iraq. Too much is at stake to wait for another Democratic defeat in 2006".

Sinclair's Hyman wrong on Ohio voting problems
On the Januauary31 edition of "The Point," Sinclair vice president Mark Hyman falsely asserted that "not a single documented case has been found" of an Ohio voter "being forced to wait as long as 11 hours" to vote during the 2004 presidential election and disputed the proven claim that "voters in heavily Democratic city precincts were forced to wait hours to vote." But according to news reports in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post, that is exactly what happened.

Justice and 9-11

After failing to obtain any competent investigation or tangible results from the 9/11 Commission, the White House, or Congress (many of the governmental personnel responsible for preventing an attack on the U.S. have actually been promoted since 9-11), many Americans are asking whether justice may be obtained through the courts. The answer is complicated, and it would be impossible for a brief article such as this to do anything other than scratch the surface concerning 9-11 justice.

Catch-22
In today's New York Times, Paul Krugman nails the fundamental Catch-22 of the Republican Social Security privatization scheme.
In a nutshell, when privatization advocates talk about the benefits of their plans, they assume extremely rosy economic growth for the next 75 years. Unrealistically rosy growth. But if their daydreams come true, then the "crisis" they claim Social Security is in disappears, too — the economic growth is more than enough to cover the modest problems the trust fund faces down the road.
In other words, their "solution" only works if the "problem" disappears.

Gorbachev Calls Iraqi Elections "Fake"

Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev called the Iraqi parliamentary elections a profanation.
In an interview with the Interfax news agency, he said the elections are "very far from what true elections are. And even though I am a supporter of elections and of the transfer of power to the people of Iraq, these elections were fake."

Uncommon SenseFreedom in Wonderland

January 28, 2005—Protected from the American public by legions of imperial storm troopers in a city that appeared to be the very model of a high-tech police state, George W. Bush used the word "freedom" 27 times in his second inaugural address. The word "liberty" appeared 15 times. Under the circumstances, it's worth recalling that "freedom" was also one of Adolph Hitler's favorite themes.
