An Indonesian plane carrying 109 people has crashed shortly after takeoff from the city of Medan, wire services report

A passenger jet has crashed into a residential area after it took off from an airport in Medan, the largest city on the island of Sumatra, officials said Monday.

An airport official said 117 people were aboard the Boeing 737-200 Mandala Airlines jetliner when it took off near a residential area. News reports placed the death toll in the dozens.
